Studebaker Avanti

The Studebaker Avanti was manufactured from June 1962, until December, 1963 resulting in cars for model years 1963 and 1964. Total production for the car is estimated at around 5800 units. The Avanti featured a fiberglass body mated to an 109 inch wheelbase Studebaker Lark Daytona convertible chassis. The engine was a 289 cubic inch V8 that produced 240 horsepower. A Paxton supercharger was an available option for the car. The Paxton corporation was headed by Andy Granatelli. Those old enough to remember Indy car racing in the 1960′s will remember Andy Granatelli as the spokesman for STP oil and gas treatments.

The Avanti was the first US production car to offer front disc brakes as standard equipment. Transmissions were either automatic or manual 4-speed. Other options including air conditioning, power steering and electric windows.
The Avanti had such a following that it did not end with the closing of Studebaker. For additional information see the Avanti Owners Association International
