"Borg War" Fan Movie Propels Machinima Into the Mainstream

HOLLIS, NH - May 30, 2006 (INB) -- Star Trek fans were dismayed when Paramount cancelled the "Enterprise" television program and put the popular science fiction franchise on hiatus until at least 2008.

Die-hard fans have now turned to the Internet for new content: specifically a feature-length, animated movie entitled "Borg War." A 52-year old New Hampshire journalist, Geoffrey James, created the movie in his spare time using a technique called "machinima" where the filmmaker manipulates computer games to create raw footage. Machinima has a cult following among hard-core gamers.

Borg War is the first feature-length machinima project to
transcend the gaming world and gain the attention of a general audience. One reason for Borg War's popularity among Star Trek
fans may be that it recycles voiceover clips from the computer
games, thereby allowing the original television actors, including Patrick Stewart, to "reprise" their roles.

Draft versions of Borg War were posted on the Internet in October of 2005, where they quickly attracted the attention of the machinima community, which honored it with two "Mackies"
award nominations at the 2005 Machinima Film Festival. The Star Trek fan base quickly got on board, responding with suggestions that have been folded into the final version.

Borg War is now scheduled for final release on September 8th, 2006, the 40th anniversary of the first Star Trek television broadcast. Additional information, including a theatrical trailer, is available at http://www.BorgWarMovie.org
