Dell and Ubuntu Linux
Wednesday May 2, 2007
Ubuntu Linux will soon be available on new Dell desktop and laptop computers. The open source operating system will feature well known software such as the Mozilla Firefox web browser and the Open Office productivity suite.
Ubuntu Linux
Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more.www.ubuntu.com
As someone who has tried Linux on a notebook and returned to Windows, I find this to be exciting news. My own experience led to frustration in not having full functionality of my Compaq R3000 series notebook. My Dvd player did not work. After several days and countless hours of searching forums, I finally achieved success with my embedded Wi-fi chip by Broadcomm. Forget about the memory stick reader from Texas Instruments. They would not release the code needed to make it function under the Fedora Linux distro. This is not to say it is the fault of Linux, no far from it. The problem lies with hardware manufacturers and proprietary code that powers these largely software driven devices.
Dell has the leverage
Dell has the leverage to negotiate with the hardware vendors. I fully anticipate that everything will work right out of the box. We buy our computers to enjoy all of the gadgets that make life in the 21st century so grand. We want to take our digital pictures and get them from the camera to the computer with out thinking about it. The same goes for our music and video. Dell should make this happen with the Ubuntu Linux distro if it is to be successful.Quality Merchant Sites
