More Gulf Drilling

Wednesday August 2, 2006

The geniuses in the Senate think it is a good idea to drill more oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently the oil platforms that washed up on the beaches of the Gulf following Hurricane Katrina last year did not make any sort of vivid impression in their collective memories. Meanwhile a thousand miles to the north Toyota ranks as the number two car maker in the US for the month of July. Ford was third followed by Honda at forth and then Chrysler at fifth. Maybe it is just silly thinking on my part, but it seems to me that if you are in the business of making gas guzzling trucks, Suv's and cars with V8 's, things are not going so well. On the other hand the two companies with high fuel mileage green vehicles seem to be doing rather well in sales. The water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico is in the mid 80's Fahrenheit. This is the engine that drives some potent hurricanes. I can't see how more drilling in the Gulf will help with the environment or our dependence on fossil fuel. This problem must first be addressed at the ballot box. It's past time to vote out the luddites.
