Return to Windows XP

Friday November 10, 2006

My experiment with the Fedora Core 5 operating system on my Compaq Presario Notebook computer has ended. I am back to using Windows Xp. The Linux system worked well enough but this machine was designed to run optimally on XP and some features could not be made to work under Linux in a reasonable amount of time. At least that was the case with my present skill level.

I did not ever get any video support to work under Fedora Core 5. I have a DVD player so it would be nice to use it. With Windows this will be possible. Another feature that was not operable was the PCMCIA card slot from Texas Instruments. They have not shared the required information to make this work with the open source system. Another thing that was rather dismal was the video display. The Compaq display is very nice under windows but lacked color and clarity using Linux.

Two of my favorite programs that allow me to get work done run under Windows. Notetab Pro is my Html editor of choice and Cyberscrub's Keychain is my choice for a password manager. The trial version has all the features but limits the number of password accounts.
