Tuvalu

Monday August 21, 2006

The domain name for .tv is actually the international country code for the tiny island nation of Tuvalulocated in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Tuvalu is the second least populated independent country in the world. Vatican City is the smallest. The island nation covers about 26 square kilometers in area.

Tuvalu has been in the news in recent years for another reason. It may be the first nation to be abandoned because of rising sea levels. Tuvalu is composed of four reef islands and 5 true atolls. The highest point of elevation is about 16 ft. A documentary has been done by Elizabeth Pollock detailing the problem. Rough Cut Tuvalu: That Sinking Feeling aired on PBS. Reading the comments on the web page provides some idea as to the totally opposing world views that exist in relation to the global warming issue.

For me, the concept of increasing carbon dioxide is not that hard to understand. The EPA has a series of articles that seem fairly straight forward and easy to understand. EPA: Global Warming and Climate seems to present the information concisely. I find it ironic that the opponents of the global warming debate do not trust the findings of the EPA, but will not hesitate to support military action for the procurement of foreign oil. Go figure.
