Upgrade to Fedora 7

Tuesday October 9, 2007

I have upgraded one of my desktop machines from Fedora Core 5 to Fedora 7. This is the Linux operating system that spun off a few years ago from the enterprise version known as Red Hat Linux. It was the easiest version change that I have done in Linux thus far. I downloaded the Live image, burned it to a CD, and booted the computer from the CD. Installation included selecting a few options and the rest was pretty much automatic.

This upgrade on a computer with a previous version of Fedora was very simple and much less time consuming than installing Windows Xp. I struggled a little bit getting the RealPlayer install, but mostly due to my own errors in that process. After a while I had RealPlayer operating and was listening to Radio Margaritaville from the Radio Margaritaville web site. I did have to click the link for "Listen the old way" as the Javascript launcher kept prompting me to install the missing RealPlayer plugin. It seems not all things go as smoothly in Linux, but there is usually a work around.

I like working with Linux and need to spend more time in that OS. Particularly since I would like to make the move to Apples and get away from Windows all together. The Mac operating system, OSX, is very much like a Linux - Unix operating system, (target audience- non geek laymen, no debate of the OS intended or implied).
